Project Road Share: How one rural county encourages more cycling on its rural roads | Project Road Share

Headlines are quick hits from media outlets from Missouri and around the world. Follow the headline link for the full story. The source of this headline says:

What is Project Road Share? It is a county-wide cycling project that partners with communities in Walton County and supporting organizations for the purpose of:

· Encouraging Walton residents to take up cycling as a way to live a healthy active lifestyle for the entire family and reduce risk of heart disease and diabetes or other lifestyle related chronic conditions.

· Creating a safe environment for cyclists through education of the general public and cyclists on safety laws and proper road etiquette.

· Identifying and publicizing safe routes for a variety of skill levels and encourage cyclists to travel these routes.

· Capitalizing on the current popularity of communities that are known as riding destinations by branding and marketing these areas as cycle-friendly to boost Walton’s cycling identity, locally and regionally.

· Acquiring funds through cycling grants and/ or donations.

MoBikeFed comment: This is a great example of how a rural county can implement a simple program that encourages healthy exercise for its residents while also helping encourage tourism and economic development and bicycle tourism in the county.

It would be great to see a few Missouri counties implement a similar project.
