Always, the Mississippi River beckoned. So near and yet so far.

And for the past 51 years, the gleaming Gateway Arch enhanced the mighty river’s shimmer. But the combined magnificence was seldom enough to lure visitors and residents across the 10 lanes of traffic that separated the Gateway Arch and riverfront from downtown St. Louis.

How frustrating. You could see it but almost like a mirage, unreachable to all but the hardiest souls or during events when police stepped in to control highway traffic.

That’s all behind us now. The breach has been crossed, or capped to be more precise, and the riverfront can be reached by those on foot, bicycles or in cars. Heck, you could even ride your unicycle. . . .

On Saturday, plans are to open the rebuilt two-lane Leonor K. Sullivan Boulevard below the Gateway Arch, easily reachable by any means of transportation. The boulevard was narrowed from four lanes to make room for sidewalks and a bike path that connect at the north end of the Arch grounds to the Riverfront Trail running north to the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge.
