You might have seen David Lay traveling all around town in his wheelchair — everywhere from the trails to Walmart to the South Side.

He’s going to be visiting more destinations at a much faster pace now, thanks to a generous gift from staff members at the Rags to Riches Pawn Shop.

As Lay went by Rags to Riches Pawn Shop on Wednesday morning, the group inside had a surprise ready for him. Lori Maddox, Tina Lovelace and Madonna Watters knew Lay and had seen him traveling around town. They decided to give him the perfect gift — a lightweight, three-wheeled cycle specially-configured so Lay could spin the pedals with his hands.

When the cycle came into the store, Maddox said she instantly thought of Lay and planned to give it to him with the help of her sister, Tina Lovelace. She had seen him traveling up and down Mark Twain Avenue, through all sorts of weather. His perseverance and upbeat personality make a positive impact throughout the community, Maddox said.
