Robert Blackford believes the region is becoming more and more "bike friendly," which he said he and other cyclists welcome. He said he rides nearly every day either on the Ruby Jack or the Frisco Greenway trails — two converted rail lines that now draw sometimes hundreds of runners, walkers and cyclists each day.

"I rode 7,400 miles this year. For the most part I just take off and ride. ... I usually hit one of the two trails probably five days a week," said Blackford, a Carthage resident and a member of the Joplin Trails Coalition.

Now, thanks to a $35,000 grant from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the coalition will be able to surface an additional 1.5 miles of the 16-mile Ruby Jack Trail, which runs from Carthage through Oronogo and Carl Junction to the state line.
