Columbia cyclists will soon be able to hop on the Katy Trail and get closer to Kansas City on a new state trail extension.

On Saturday, the first 47.6-miles of the new Rock Island Trail State Park will open, connecting to the cross-state Katy Trail at Windsor, Missouri, and continuing west to Pleasant Hill.

The distance between Columbia and the western end of the trail system will be 135 miles.

Plans are to eventually build a cross-state trail along the old Rock Island rail corridor. It will intersect the Katy Trail at both ends to form a 459-mile loop.
