Senate Minority Leader Gina Walsh has always been a strong and vocal leader in the Missouri legislature and has plenty to say when it comes to the state’s budget.

When asked about her reactions to Governor Eric Greitens’ State of the State address on this week’s #MOLEG Podcast, she said she was surprised that she didn’t hear much about transportation, infrastructure, and highways.

The Democratic senator says that the Missouri Department of Transportation tends to get a bad reputation, but that doesn’t change the fact that the MoDOT cannot do more than they have the funding to do.

MoBikeFed comment: There is not much that the two parties in the American political system agree on. But one place they both do agree is that transportation is a core function of government.

They may disagree on how transportation should be funded or on transportation priorities. But no one disagrees that it is important--an essential and irreplaceable role of government.

So it really was surprising to hear that there was essentially no mention at all of the Missouri transportation funding in the Governor's inaugural address and first proposed budget.

It is the earliest days of the new administration yet, so that situation may change.
