Arrest Made in Visiting Bicyclist Theft on ACA Midwest Express Route in Atchison l MSC News

The valuable bicycle was stolen while 76-year-old Ken Gross was doing laundry, around 11:00 on the morning of August 8, at an Atchison laundromat. He had ridden in to Atchison as part of his journey, which began July 16 in Maryland, enroute to Oregon.

The bicycle, after police were called, was located in nearby Missouri, just across the Amelia Earhart Memorial Bridge, allowing Gross to continue his cross-country journey. Erickson had fled on foot, eluding officers until his Tuesday morning arrest.

Gross, following the Missouri recovery of his bike, as well as other missing equipment then located in Atchison, thanked Atchison Police.

MoBikeFed comment: Gross was riding the Eastern Express Connector, "a speedier version" Adventure Cycling Association's Transamerica Trail.

The Express Connector route has two branches in Missouri. Both follow the Katy Trail across most of MIssouri. Gross was following the northern branch, which follows the Lewis & Clark Bicycle Route north of Kansas City, crossing the Missouri River to Atchison, Kansas.

The southern branch takes the Katy Trail to the western end at Clinton, then heads due west through Adrian, Missouri and Garnett, Kansas.
