In praise of e-bikes, which could save our cities

E-bikes are under attack everywhere these days, for going too fast, for riding on the sidewalk, for being too big. Except that most of the time, they are not even e-bikes. . . .

Toll notes:

* More e-bikes mean fewer cars.

* They are used for everything from shopping to school drop-offs (that’s how my grandchildren get to school), and they are becoming true car replacements.

* They improve air quality.

* They are an affordable, low-barrier form of transportation. (People complain they are expensive, but not compared to cars!)

Toll acknowledges that there are problems and worries that the problem isn’t the bikes, it’s the backlash. He concludes:

“So yes, let’s keep improving safety. Let’s clarify the rules. Let’s invest in infrastructure. But most importantly, let’s not lose sight of the bigger picture. We’re all in this together. We’re either going to collectively find solutions or collectively suffer the consequences, and even more so, our kids."
