A coalition of more than 1,000 nonprofits, businesses, and elected officials is calling on the U.S. Congress to maintain and strengthen federal funding for walking and biking infrastructure, warning that cuts could stall decades of progress and make streets less safe for millions of Americans.

The appeal comes as lawmakers prepare the next federal transportation reauthorization bill, which determines how billions of dollars are spent on roads, transit, and other mobility projects. At the center of the push is the Transportation Alternatives (TA) program, the primary federal funding source for trails, bike lanes, sidewalks, and related infrastructure.

“It is critical these investments continue, rather than stall progress communities have been making for decades,” said Bill Nesper, Executive Director of the League of American Bicyclists. “When we build bicycle-friendly communities, we make life better for every resident and Congress should support funding that improves lives, expands transportation options, and reduces the dangers faced by people walking and biking on our roads.”
