Governor names two new MoDOT commissioners

The governor has appointed the two new members of the Highway & Transportation Commission. From Kansas City is Rev. Wallace Hartsfield and from Mexico, pharmacist and former Mexico mayor Larry Webber.

The Missouri Bicycle Federation has led a campaign to make sure the newly appointed MoDOT commissioners are knowledgeable about and friendly towards bicycle and pedestrian accommodations. Missouri bicyclists and pedestrians represent approximately 10% of Missouri trips and 10% of roadway injuries and fatalities. 10% of Missouri houiseholds own no automobile. Over 25% of Missourians have no drivers license.

From the KCStar:
The Rev. Wallace Hartsfield, one of Kansas City's most prominent clergymen, was appointed to the Missouri Highway and Transportation Commission on Monday, replacing restaurateur Ollie Gates. . . .

Hartsfield joins the commission during a time of transition. Gates and department Director Henry Hungerbeeler resigned in December after a citizen panel recommended changes in the way the state transportation department is run.

The pastor is the second vice president of the National Baptist Convention of America and chairman of that organization's economic development program. . . .

He said he accepted the appointment only after talking with Gates and other community leaders, who encouraged Hartsfield to serve. Gates, who attended the news conference, said he had two suggestions for his replacement: keep up beautification efforts and make sure that department decisions are inclusive of the entire community.
From the Southeast Missourian:
[Larry] Webber is the co-owner and operate of two pharmacies in Mexico and is on the board of directors of Commerce Bank and Mexico Industrial Development. He previously served as mayor and president of the Mexico Area Chamber of Commerce.

"Larry has a long history of civic service and involvement, and he will be a great asset to the Highway Commission," Holden said in prepared remarks. He announced Webber's appointment at the Audrain County Courthouse.
