Thousands of WalMart and Target bicycles have serious safety issues

According to a KCStar article:
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission alleged that Dynacraft BSC Inc., of San Rafael, Calif., failed on multiple occasions to tell the government about serious defects in its bikes, which were sold at Target and Wal-Mart stores around the country.

“People may have these bikes still sitting in their garages,” said Scott Wolfson, a spokesman for the CPSC. “These are serious defects,” he said.

The CPSC said Dynacraft imported nearly 250,000 mountain bikes between July 1999 and March 2001 that had two types of defective forks.

The forks, which are part of the steering column, can break apart and separate from the front wheel, causing a rider to lose control and fall. More than 50,000 bikes also were made with a defect that caused the pedals to come loose and fall off. . . .

Subsequent recalls by the bike maker involved its Vertical XL2, Magna Electroshock, Next Shockzone, Magna Equator and Next Ultra Shock models.
