Columbia, MO, Public Works purchases bicycle for use by employees during work hours
Submitted by Brent Hugh on Fri, 12/31/2004 - 2:00am
The Public Works Engineering Division has taken the concept of biking to work a step further. The division has begun biking at work.
Recognizing that evaluation of bicycle-friendly traffic facilities can best be made by the user, the Engineering Division recommended that a bicycle be purchased and used for experiencing the riders perspective when designing roadways or intersections and when evaluating locations that have been identified as potentially unsafe.
There is a lot of activity going on in the city and a limited number of trucks available to employees, making additional transportation necessary. Instead of buying a new truck and having to provide a place to park it, engineers and inspectors can take a city bike to many local job sites.
Many employees in engineering are cyclists and are enthusiastic about the addition of the bicycle to the departments fleet. It is expected that the bicycle will be well used in the continuing efforts to encourage all modes of transportation in Columbia.
