Missouri Bicycling Lifetime Achievement Award for 5 KCMO employees

Missouri Bicycle Federation and Greater Kansas City Bicycle Federation jointly give awards Monday, April 25th, 2PM

Five Kansas City, Missouri, employees have been awarded the "Missouri Bicycling Lifetime Achievement Award" by the boards of directors of the Missouri Bicycle Federation and the Greater Kansas City Bicycle Federation.

The awards will be giving Monday, April 25th, 2PM in Larry Frevert's office, 4600 E 63rd Street (west building).

Larry Frevert, Paul Mohr, Al Landoll, John Stufflebean, and Peter Loughlin were members of the Bicycle Task Force that created, built support for, and finally passed the BikeKC initiative in 2002.

"Star columnist Mike Hendricks summed it up perfectly when he said that BikeKC was the first thing Kansas City had ever done to make itself a 'cool city'," says Missouri Bicycle Federation President Brent Hugh.

Some accomplishments of the Bicycle Task Force, as summarized by Task Force member Paul Mohr

• Adoption of arterial bicycle routes in the city's Major Street Plan, giving the City power to acquire additional right of way for future bicycle facilities.
   
• Vigorous debate by the City Council, leading to an unambiguous policy in support of on-street bicycling.
   
• Strong and vocal public input and media support and exposure.
   
• Bicycle carriers to be installed on all city buses by the end of 2003.
   
• Targeting of a couple million federal dollars to mitigate roadway hazards along the city's approved bike routes.
   
• Hazardous grate replacement on the Paseo Bridge and bicycle lanes on the Chouteau Bridge, two of our few crossing points over the Missouri river.

"BikeKC set the foundation for a more bicycle-friendly Kansas City," says Hugh. "Now we need to make sure that we continue to build on that foundation."
