Access across river bridges is important to me!

Ron McLinden of the Thomas Hart Benton Group, Sierra Club, wrote this note to KDOT about the issue of bicycle & pedestrian access across major river bridges in the Kansas City area:
Dear Secretary Miller,

Bicycle and pedestrian access across the river bridges in the Kansas City area is important to me.

Many citizens -- probably more than we realize -- rely on walking and bicycling to reach important destinations like work, school, and shopping. The number who do so is certain to rise in the future as fuel and other transportation costs rise. Virtually every one of Kansas City's current river bridges is a barrier to autonomous access to essential opportunities.

Kansas City is one of the few major U.S. cities that fail to provide safe bicycle and pedestrian access across a major river. St. Louis, with much larger rivers to cross, has numerous safe bicycle and pedestrian bridge crossings.

This is not about black spandex. It's about a fundamental right of access to vital opportunities -- jobs, education, goods and services, etc. -- for all people.

Please help us bring the Kansas City region into the 21st century by assuring KDOT's support for a Kansas City river crossings policy that provides safe crossing points for all who walk and bicycle.
Do you agree with Ron that we need better bicycle & pedestrian access across river bridges? You can express your opinion in less than 2 minutes here.

Already more than 300 Kansans and Missourians have expressed support for the river crossings issue.

To be really effective, we really need to have over 500 people contact KDOT--we're getting close!.
