Stage 1 crash breaks hand-bone of Christian Vande Velde--but he'll continue tomorrow

Just heard from a Garmin/Slipstream spokeswoman:

Christian Vande Velde, defending champion of the Tour of Missouri, fell and broke us second metacarpal (bone in the base of his hand) near the end of the Stage 1 of the Tour of Missouri today. X-ray revealed a hairline fracture.

But he'll be riding tomorrow. It's stable and it won't take a cast--but it will be very painful.

"Luck hasn't been on my side this year. I went down in a big crash within 500 meters. I crashed into the guys who went down first and then into a fire hydrant. It could have been a lot worse. Racing is going to be painful, but I'm the defending champion and continuing is important to me and my team. I'll be at the start tomorrow."
