"One of the great things about a tandem is it's a fantastic equalizer for couples," White said, ahead of our 25-mile ride. "A faster-riding guy and a slower woman — or vice versa — you’re both going to be together and spend quality time together and have a lot of time enjoying it. It’s a great way to stay fit and ride together. It’s a great way for us baby boomers to really enjoy cycling."

White, the tandem bike coordinator with Springbike Bicycle Club in Springfield, said he and his wife, Jean, have been riding tandems for seven years, and are on their third tandem bicycle. They’ve been to tandem bike rallies in Texas, Wisconsin, Alabama and Missouri and enjoy the fellowship and camaraderie that tandem bikers share.
