Missouri Trail Summit - New MO Trails website, Governor celebrates Best Trails State award, 100 MO Mile Challenge
The Missouri Trails Summit was held this week in Columbia. This year, Missouri trail advocates had a lot to celebrate:
- Earlier this year Missouri was named "Best Trails State" by American Trails. Governor Nixon stopped by the Summit's opening reception to help celebrate.
- The Governor's 100 Missouri Mile Challenge is continuing--with the goal to encourage more people to get off the couch and experience more Missouri trails
- The new Missouri trails website was demoed. This new website, which will roll out its trail search feature sometime in the next few weeks, is planned to allow users to search for all Missouri trails in any part of the state.
VisitMissouriTrails.com website demo
The trails website demo was the heart of the conference, taking the entire morning session of the main day. The new web site looks to be a hit, with many features that will help Missourians find trails of all kinds, including maps, lists of features, location of trailheads, and location of trail amenities.
Eventually the website is designed to feature every Missouri trail--all depending on trail agencies uploading their data, however! At first rollout, it will include just over 1000 miles of trails from the Department of Natural Resources, Great Rivers Greenway, and the Ozark Trail. Look for the first version of the trail search function to be announced within a few weeks if all goes well.
Other conference sessions: Leave no trace, CityArchRiver, Bike/Ped Advocacy and Trails
Other conference sessions included Leave No Trace, a presentation on St. Louis's CityArchRiver project, a session on equestrian trails, a session on finding trails funding, and a roundtable session.
Brent Hugh of MoBikeFed and Mac Vorce of Truman Lake Bikes presented a session on bicycle and pedestrian advocacy and how it relates to trails. Hugh talked about how Complete Streets, Bicycle & Walk Friendly Communities programs, and the proposed new $8 billion Missouri transportation funding plan can help make a community's trail plan work become a reality. Missouri's proposed new transportation funding program, slated for a public vote in November 2014, will for the first time allow for funding of bicycle and pedestrian facilities such as trails.
Vorce talked about how Warsaw, Missouri, was able to turn it city trail plan into reality and use those newly create trails, along with other resources like its mountain bike park, to create one of the best small communities for biking and walking in the nation.
The Missouri Trails Summit is presented by the Missouri Park and Recreation Association.
Promoting a world-class bicycle and pedestrian system, including a world-class trails system, in one of the primary goals of MoBikeFed's Vision for Bicycling and Walking in Missouri.
