Whether by vehicle, foot, bicycle, skateboard, scooter or wheelchair, Springfield city streets now serve all modes of transportation. Crosswalk safety is a top concern of Springfield's Public Works Department. Last year, three pedestrians were killed and 54 injured on Springfield streets.

Public Works has installed audible crosswalk signals at 14 crosswalks in Springfield, with plans to install 11 more this year. A HAWK (high-intensity activated crosswalk) signal is currently under construction at the intersection of Kimbrough Avenue and East Sunset Street in south Springfield, with operation to begin in April.
