After years of promising it, Amtrak is about to offer roll-on bicycle service on the Capitol Limited route that passes through Pittsburgh.

With two premier bike trails parallel to the route, enthusiasts and bicycle organizations have long pressed the railroad to add the service. Currently, bikes must be dismantled and packed in boxes and can only be loaded on and off trains at staffed stations, of which there are none between here and Washington, D.C.

MoBikeFed comment: At the urging of the Missouri Bicycle & Pedestrian Federation in the late 1990s, Missouri Amtrak service started offering bicycle roll-on service on the Missouri River Runner route that parallels the Katy Trail across the state.

That program has been a big success for Missouri, with bicycles on nearly every train that runs during good weather months.

It's great to see Amtrak starting to offer similar service on other routes across the nation.

And Missouri will greatly improve and expand its bicycle roll-on service with Missouri's Amtrak routes get new rail cars in the next few years.
