Rail trail program in central Kansas has followed a long and winding road | HutchNews.com

Headlines are quick hits from media outlets from Missouri and around the world. Follow the headline link for the full story. The source of this headline says:

Like roots of a thirsty plant, a patchwork system of converted rail lines-turned recreational trails has been attempting for decades to spread across the Kansas landscape.

Those roots are heartiest in the east, where the 117-mile-long Flint Hills Nature Trail stretches from Osawatomie to Herrington and the roughly 50-mile Prairie Spirit Trail connects Ottawa with Iola. They provide long paths for walking, running, bicycling and horseback riding.

They also serve as testaments to the success achievable by other communities.

But while there are ambitious plans for similar trails throughout central Kansas, finding the necessary support and funding has proven to be a long and winding road.
