Citing safety concerns, opponents call for a stop to Congressional plan for longer trucks; MoBikeFed opposes longer trucks | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Congress is poised to allow bigger trucks on the nation’s highways, a move that would “put the safety of our nation’s roads into reverse,” U.S. Sen. Bob Casey said Thursday.

Language inserted into appropriations bills in the House and Senate would require states to allow what are called “twin 33s,” or double trailers each 33 feet in length. Only 11 states currently allow them, said Mr. Casey, D-Pa., in a conference call with reporters.

“I believe bigger trucks on the road means the potential of more accidents and increased danger for children and families,” he said. He quoted Joan Claybrook, former head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, who said the longer vehicles “would be like trains on our highways.”

MoBikeFed comment: Because of the increased danger to cyclists and pedestrians that the longer trucks proposal poses, we have joined a coalition working to oppose this new and dangerous proposal.
