The city has a new title to add to its resume: a walk-friendly designation. The bronze-level award comes from the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center.

"Not everybody has cars so I think a town this size needs to be walkable just because its small enough to where you can walk around," Springfield resident Airen Cox says.

Making the city more walkable has been a goal for engineer David Hutchinson, since the late 1990s when the Vision 20/20 campaign listed biking and walking as a future priority for the city. Getting the nationally recognized bronze level award is a step in that direction. "Bronze level is good," he says. "It shows that we're working on it, that it's a priority here." He also added that a few years ago, the city earned a designation for being bike-friendly, too.
