Hamelink said the project would build a sidewalk from Woods supermarket to McDonald’s along U.S. 54, in addition to adding a pedestrian island at the intersection of U.S. 54 and Mo. 82. The island would create a safe zone for pedestrians trying to cross either highway. The sidewalk will be about 5 feet wide, Hamelink said, and private driveways along the southside stretch of U.S. 54 which are in bad or poor condition also may be improved or repaired as workers build the sidewalks. The project would build the sidewalk on the south side of U.S. 54; however, Hamelink said if enough funds remain available from the project’s budget and construction bids are low enough, then some work could be done on the north side of the highway.
