Like most American kids in the ’80s, I quit biking when I got my driver’s license. I started biking again in college but didn’t think much of it. It was just a quick way to get around campus and avoid parking tickets.

In my mid-20s, I was training for an adventure race and decided to bike on all journeys of 5 miles or less as a means of increasing my cardio workouts. I was surprised to learn that most of Columbia was within a 5-mile radius of my house.

I never thought of biking as anything other than a quick way to get around, save money and get some exercise. I certainly never thought about bike advocacy or the “built environment” — until I had kids.
