If you’re a New York City cyclist—or an outsider clued in to media coverage of bike controversy—then you’ll no doubt remember the citywide backlash against bike lanes in early 2011.

Janette Sadik-Khan, NYC’s transportation commissioner from 2007 through 2013, recently published an excerpt from Streetfight: Handbook for an Urban Revolution—her new book about successfully navigating the Great Bikelash—in New York Magazine. She describes the period of extreme anti-bike sentiment as “the toughest months I’ve ever endured professionally.” From the moment Sadik-Khan took office, she sought to overturn the transportation status quo and make New York City more like Copenhagen. New parking-protected bike lanes went in all over the city and were as controversial as they were cheap to build.
