It’s official — a new Highway 47 Missouri River bridge will be constructed over the next couple of years.

Wednesday morning, the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission awarded a contract to Alberici Constructors Inc. to construct the new Highway 47 span at Washington. . . .

The new structure is designed with two 12-foot driving lanes, two 10-foot shoulders and a 10-foot-wide biking/walking path along the west side. An overlook, where walkers and bikers can stop and view the river and cityscape, is proposed at the center bridge pier.

The new bridge path will connect to a biking/walking path along Highway 47, north of the river, which ties into the state’s Katy Trail at Dutzow.

MoBikeFed comment: This bike/ped connection has been a l-o-n-g time coming. It will replace one of the oldest and most dangerous Missouri River crossings for both motorists and bicyclists.

It will connect Washington, MO, to the Katy Trail.

And it will be the eight Missouri River Bridge with a separated bike/ped crossing. As recently as 2003 we had only ONE river bridge with a safe bike/ped crossing.

That is some real progress in just 15 years.
