Officials Urge State to Award Hwy 47 Bridge Contract - to include bike/ped connection between Washington & Katy Trail : The Missourian

Headlines are quick hits from media outlets from Missouri and around the world. Follow the headline link for the full story. The source of this headline says:

City and county officials are optimistic that the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission will award a contract to build a new Highway 47 Missouri River bridge.

There have been concerns since the apparent low bid on the project exceeds the budget projection by more than $10 million.

The state highway commission meets next Wednesday, June 8, in Kansas City, and a MoDOT recommendation on the contract is expected to be presented at that time.

MoBikeFed comment: The proposed Hwy 47 bridge will include one of the most important missing pieces of Missouri's bike/ped network, a trail connection between the Katy Trail and Washington.

Other Katy Trail Communities now had a bike/ped accessible bridge over the river--from Boonville to Jefferson City to Hermann and St. Charles. The river crossing on Hwy 47 at Washington is the most difficult and dangerous bridge for bicyclists and pedestrians along the Katy Trail.

The bridge is also used as part of the national Great Rivers West Bicycle Route.

In addition, it will create the key connection between the Rock Island Trail and the Katy Trail that will allow those two major trails to be connected into a seamless statewide trail loop.
