Missouri's Rock Island Trail is coming together! With a little momentum, and some push from the affected communities, Missouri will soon become the rails-to-trails destination of North America.
About the Rock Island Trail in MO

The Rock Island Trail is a planned "rails-to-trails" trail which will stretch over 200 miles across the state of Missouri. It will intersect the Katy Trail on both the western and eastern sides of the state, forming a 450 mile loop.

Construction is underway on the western end, which will connect Windsor to Kansas City's southeastern suburbs. . . .

Towns

Pleasant Hill has already built out a few miles of the trail within its area.

Windsor provides a Katy Trail connection. The Windsor to Pleasant Hill section should be completed by late 2016. According to MORIT, MO State Parks has given their blessing to hikers and riders using this section of trail now, as long as they don't interfere with the workers who are building the trail.

Eldon to Freeburg clearing is underway. Rails should be up by spring 2016, with the trail ready a couple years later.
