Summer biking season soon should get a bit easier — and safer — in parts of Carthage.

Work to designate bicycle lanes on just more than 15 miles of city streets is to be done by the end of the month, according to Tom Short, city administrator.

The project will include signs posted along streets designating bicycle lanes, and some streets will be painted to show the shared lanes, he said. . . .

"We'd like the bicycle paths to be part of an overall system in the future, and to link with the trails systems," Short said. "We think there's going to be a lot more work to tie them all together; it's also something the federal government is encouraging."

The Ruby Jack Trail, used for bicycling and walking and jogging, starts near Oak Street in Carthage and extends through Oronogo and Carl Junction to the Kansas state line. A 3.5-mile route suitable for jogging and mountain biking has been developed in the Walnut Bottoms area near Kellogg Lake.
