With a master plan in hand that calls for an eventual total of 58 miles of bicycle lanes in and around Carthage, the city is starting to look at what it will take to install these lanes on the city streets. . . .

Brady Beckham, a city council member who has been pushing the concept, said the bike lanes will help kids and adults.

“To me, the bike lanes serve three important purposes,” Beckham said. “They allow cheap transportation for people who either do not want or cannot afford a car to get to and from work. Kids should be able to ride school and do so safely and these are a way to help with that. Also kids and their parents should be able to get to our local parks without having to drive their car.”

Short said most of the bike lanes shared lanes created by painting chevrons on the city streets to remind drivers to watch for bicyclists. The city will also have to work with the Missouri Department of Transportation because the plans call for bike lanes on Garrison Street, which is also State Highway 571.
