There is a new effort this year to save an old bridge from being demolished. If a group can raise enough money by the end of 2016, MoDOT could spare the Route 66 State Park Bridge in Eureka from coming down. Bill Hart and Ruth Keenoy with Save the Meramec Route 66 Bridge say they want it to be restored for pedestrians and cyclists to enjoy.

The Route 66 State Park Bridge once connected both parts of the park over the Meramec River and is part of the iconic Route 66.

"We have people come from all over the world and they want to see the bridge," Keenoy said.

"Route 66, which hasn't been recognized as a federal road in 15 or 20 years, actually generates millions of dollars of income every year by tourism," Hart said.

MoBikeFed comment: We understand that the "Save the Meramec Route 66 Bridge" committee has received commitments from major donors--enough to save the bridge from destruction and transfer it to the ownership of Missouri State Parks. However, they are still looking for contributions from Route 66 supporters to show community interest and to help fund the retrofit of the bridge for bicycle and pedestrian use as part of historic Bicycle Route 66.
