The bicycle and walking trail to be built on the Rock Island Railroad corridor in Jackson County could stop short of running through Lee’s Summit, county and parks officials said. That leaves the parks department looking for ways to bring bike trails into the city.

“We’d like to find a way to bring the Katy Trail to Lee’s Summit,” said Tom Lovell, Lee’s Summit parks administrator.

The board last week hired Vireo Inc. to do a $15,000 study on ways to connect with the Rock Island Trail Park in Pleasant Hill. That trail stretches to Windsor, where bicyclists can switch to the Katy Trail.

MoBikeFed comment: With the 17.7 Jackson County portion of the Rock Island Trail moving forward, and the 47-mile Pleasant Hill to Windsor section of the Rock Island State Park set to open December 2016, the Greenwood Gap will stand as the biggest single gap in our vision for a statewide trail leading state line to state line, and from the heart of St. Louis to the heart of Kansas City.

The other significant gaps in the current/planned cross-state Rock Island/Katy Trail network are:

- Sedalia, where the city and State of Missouri have funded a plan to close the gap
- Pleasant Hill, where a very short section of the Rock Island Trail will run on Hwy 58 to bypass an awkward railroad crossing
- Kansas City, where plans to make a seamless trail connection from the end of the Rock Island corridor near the Truman Sports Complex to the heart of KC at Union Station are underway
- St. Louis, where work to create a seamless trail connection from the Katy to downtown St. Louis and various other communities in the region is underway thanks to ongoing support from Great Rivers Greenway
