Officials want to make Gravois Road in Affton a "Great Street"--but need to hear from local cyclists in support of bicycle accommodations | Webster Kirkwood Times

Headlines are quick hits from media outlets from Missouri and around the world. Follow the headline link for the full story. The source of this headline says:

For South County residents – particularly those in unincorporated Affton – Gravois Road has been and remains a multi-generational lifeline.

It evokes memories of Route 66 and the walk to and from school, whether public or parochial. It's where you go for dinner out or to get your car repaired.

The East-West Gateway Council of Governments has come up with a plan that will preserve Gravois' history while enhancing its ambiance and economic potential as one of the region's "Great Streets." It is now up to St. Louis County Planning and the St. Louis County Council to decide what components of the plan to act on.

Described within the 45 pages of the plan is a vision for Gravois between Mackenzie Road and River des Peres. It includes plantings along the edges of St. Marcus Cemetery, creation of a business district, pedestrian crossings to regional trails and greenways, re-use of excess pavement, expanded sidewalks and parking, strategic road striping and more. Some of the components have cost estimates that, when combined, would put the entire project at more than $1.5 million, while other costs remain undetermined. . . .

Carney said despite bicycle lanes being part of the plan's recommendations, public support has been soft for bike accommodations.

"We'll be trying to determine what we want to do with the paved areas that are left on Gravois," he said. "That could be plantings, parallel parking or wide sidewalks."
