Pedestrian fatalities on the rise - BolivarMONews.com: News

Headlines are quick hits from media outlets from Missouri and around the world. Follow the headline link for the full story. The source of this headline says:

Walking is an essential transportation mode for many Missourians. For transit or motor vehicle users, every trip begins and ends as a pedestrian. Public health, economic and environmental factors are elevating the importance of this mode. Many citizens do not have access to a personal vehicle, are not physically capable of driving, simply decide not to drive, or delay licensure.

To date, 83 pedestrians have been killed in Missouri traffic crashes this year. This equates to nearly 10 percent of all statewide traffic fatalities.

MoBikeFed comment: For context, here this list shows the number of pedestrian fatalities in Missouri annually for the years 2006 through 2016:

76 79 63 68 55 75 84 73 65 104 83 (and counting)

Between 2000 and 2005, we say between 80 and 92 Missouri pedestrians killed annually. We may be returning to that higher rate of pedestrian fatalities.

This is particularly unfortunate, because in the same period we have seen motor vehicle fatalities overall decrease substantially.

It is time to spend more time, money, and effort designing our transportation system for pedestrian access and safety.
