Missouri motorists could face a felony charge in a hit-and-run accident under a proposed law.

State Rep. Bill Reiboldt, R-Neosho, is sponsoring House Bill 178, which would impose a class D felony if the driver leaves the scene of a traffic crash and it results in a death. A class D felony carries a term of up to seven years of imprisonment.

“When you leave the scene of a motor vehicle crash, you just created another problem for yourself,” said Sgt. Jacob Angle with the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

MoBikeFed comment: We met today with Rep. Reiboldt, the new House Transportation Chair, in Jefferson City. Among the messages we gave him today is that we strongly support his work to increase penalties for drivers involved in a collision who flee the scene.

This is a scenario too often reported by our members when they are involved in a collision.
