Trail users as well as residents of North St. Louis Avenue turned out Monday afternoon to view plans for a street widening project that will provide safety islands at trail crossings.

Representatives of Joplin's public works department answered questions and noted requests for changes to the plan during an open house from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at Royal Heights United Methodist Church, 1612 Euclid Ave.

Construction may start as early as March 13 to expand St. Louis from two lanes to three and add bicycle lanes and sidewalks on both sides. The work will be done from Zora Street to Langston Hughes-Broadway.

That stretch crosses two trails, the 4-mile Frisco Greenway Trail, and the 1.5-mile Turkey Creek Trail.
