Perry County Community Lake is a familiar place for area anglers and nature lovers to enjoy many types of recreation from fishing and archery to hiking and biking. The four-mile walking trail circling the lake consists of light to moderate terrain and is ideal for walkers and joggers alike, but in several low areas standing water has caused problems for those out enjoying it.

Resource Forester and Area Manager for Perry County Community Lake Mike Keeley noticed these areas could use some improvements, and took action.

Two raised walkways now stand topped with weather-resistant composite decking materials on concrete supports to allow trail pedestrians to bypass the often-soft location.

“At the trail head on the lower end of the lake near the dam there are a few drainages entering the lake,” Keeley said. “During the spring when the water rises that portion has historically been consistently wet and muddy. We tried to make an alternative trail but it was not being used. It was at this point we decided it would be appropriate to build some type of walkway to fix these continuing issues.”

Over the past several years the trail traffic has seen a steady increase so the department is trying to step up their efforts to keep the trail in good condition. Along with the increased use the type of use the area sees has changed as well. Not only are bank-fisherman and avid hikers using the trail but more leisure walkers, mountain bikers and runners have been seen.
