The Johnson County Spirit Trail Coalition discussed ways to extend the trail to Chilhowee and Leeton during its meeting on Tuesday, April 16.

With completion of the trail between Warrensburg and Knob Noster State Park, coalition members seek ways to connect the trail with the Rock Island Trail, which runs across southern Johnson County.

A proposal was broached at the last meeting by coalition Secretary Sallie Ashe to use county roads as bike routes to Chilhowee and/or Leeton, rather than state highways.

Johnson County Presiding Commissioner Bill Gabel, who serves as coalition chairman, said he had directed County Road Superintendent Gary Bell “to find a safe way to connect to the (Rock Island) trail, if joint use can be done safely.”

MoBikeFed comment: The Warrensburg area Spirit Trail is close to connecting Warrensburg with Whiteman Air Force Base now. If Warrensburg can also create a connection south to the Rock Island Trail, it will create a bicycle hub in the area.

This is similar to the idea launched by communities between the Katy Trail and Springfield, with the Butterfield Stage Experience--250 miles of connected gravel routes linking most major cities in the area.
