MoBikeFed comment: Grover reminds us that, even if a particular driver doesn't bicycle or walk much, their friends, neighbors, and community members - people they really care about - do.I’ve always believed that the "us versus them" debate between drivers and cyclists is counterproductive, especially in a society where car dependence is pretty much baked in, and where dangerous roads discourage many of us from biking, walking, or rolling as much as we otherwise would.
[T]hose of us who do drive can play an active and even aggressive role in making streets safer for those who do not.
So, what does that look like?
She suggests these steps drivers can take to make the streets safer for people who bicycle and walk:
- Drive less
- Drive smaller vehicles - ie, the smallest vehicle necessary, rather than the largest one possible
- Drive slower
- Use your vehicle mindfully to protect vulnerable road users in certain situations
- When passing, be sure there is enough space for you to pass safely, but also enough that the person being passed *feels* safe, too.
- Communicate in a friendly way and be courteous.
