FREE Traffic Safety 101 Course Sunday morning for TdW riders
Do you know all you need to know to safely ride a bike with traffic? Do you feel you know enough to teach your children how to ride cautiously and conspicuously while on their own? When you drive your car, are you confident on how to share the road with people on bikes? Do you know how to safely share the road with many other cyclists on a group ride?
Tour de Wildwood riders are invited to join a Traffic Safety 101 Course ride-day morning--FREE with your TdW registration. The course will be with one of the most experienced Bike Ed instructors in the region, who has taught hundreds of similar classes, and will cover traffic safety and group riding skills for cyclists.
The class will start at 8am the morning of the ride at Wildwood City Hall, in a City Hall Room (ask for details at ride registration).
After enjoying this fun and educational course for about 1 hour, you can immediately depart for the short course (28 mile route) at 9am.
The course is great for novice, intermediate, and experienced riders. It will cover skills such as dealing with traffic, negotiating intersections, and handling common group ride scenarios safely and confidently.
Traffic Safety 101 Registration: When you register for the ride, you'll have the option to add the Traffic Safety 101 class as a free option. If you'd like to register for the class only (or add the class later), just contact Kristin Naeger, City of Wildwood Parks and Recreation (636-458-0440 or kristin[at]cityofwildwood.com).
eBikes at the Tour de Wildwood
We are inviting riders of Class 1 eBikes to ride the Tour de Wildwood on an experimental basis for 2022 - if riders will follow the guidelines below. (Class 2 and 3 owners can contact us to ask special permission - director@mobikefed.org or 816-695-6736.)
- Class 1 eBikes only (those with pedal assist only, maximum assist speed of 20 mph, and no throttle - see classes below). Class 2 and 3 eBike owners, please contact director@mobikefed.org - we may be able to arrange special permission.
- eBikes will start separately after other riders have departed.
- eBike riders should generally avoid riding in groups with or close to non-eBikes, unless the eBike rider is skilled, experienced, and confident in being able to ride with and blend in with other riders, or for example, other riders are regular riding partners.
- If other riders ask the eBike rider to ride separately, the eBike rider must leave the group. (However - riders should only as eBike riders to ride separately if there are actual serious safety issues - and in that case the situation is no different than with any other rider who is not experienced enough to safely ride with a particular group.)
- Be aware of battery capacity as routes may be longer than battery capacity and no opportunity for charging is available on the course.
- eBike riders in the event agree to ride cautiously and safely, and to follow all rules of the road, including: 1) Stop at all stop signs & stop lights. 2) Single up when cars are trying to pass. 3) Signal turns & stops clearly. 4) Be safe & courteous to everyone on the road: motorists, pedestrians, & cyclists.
The three eBike classes are defined as follows:
- Class 1: eBikes that are pedal-assist only, with no throttle, and have a maximum assisted speed of 20 mph.
- Class 2: eBikes that also have a maximum speed of 20 mph, but are throttle-assisted.
- Class 3: eBikes that are pedal-assist only, with no throttle, and a maximum assisted speed of 28 mph.
All classes limit the motor’s power to 1 horsepower (750W).
eBike class definitions are as in Missouri eBike law. The three classes are the same as the federally definied eBike classes.
Questions about eBike usage at the Tour de Wildwood, or if you own a Class 2 or 3 eBike and would like to ride in the event, please contact director@mobikefed.org - 816-695-6736.
