Apply now for new Active Transportation Infrastructure Investment Program (ATIIP) grants - due June 17th, 2024

Kevin Mills of the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy gives the lowdown on a major new program to fund bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure.  Please share the word to your local city, county, metropolitan planning organization or regional planning commission, or any other agency that is looking to fund their bicycle and pedestrian needs.

ATIIP is new program designed to fund large projects - it will fund infrastructure projects $15 million or more in total project cost, or planning initiatives of $100,000 or more. See the Federal Highway Administration announcement of the program here.

Applications are now open for the first ever funding round of the Active Transportation Infrastructure Investment Program (ATIIP).

This unique program, administered by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), strategically invests in projects that connect active transportation networks and spines, accelerating local and regional plans to create safe and convenient walking and biking routes to everyday destinations, and to fill gaps between communities.

$45 million is available for active transportation projects or groups of projects with a total cost of at least $15 million or planning and design grants with a total cost of at least $100,000.

The following are eligible project sponsors or applicants:

• Local or regional governmental organizations (including metropolitan planning organizations or regional planning organizations and councils)
• A multicounty special district
• A state
• A multistate group of governments
• Tribal governments

ATIIP will enable communities to build on existing infrastructure for walking and biking to safely connect people to the destinations they travel to routinely, while also creating opportunities for sustainable transportation and recreation.

This initial funding round is an excellent opportunity to secure funding to plan your system, pursue your infrastructure gap-filling strategy or make key connections to neighboring communities. Even unsuccessful applicants will gain advantages for future rounds, and strong demand for ATIIP will help to grow the program.

Applicants must submit their applications through grants.gov. Applications are due by Monday, June 17, 11:59 p.m. Eastern.
