Tucker Blvd. is being reconfigured with non-driver safety in mind by adding protected two-way bike paths, raised medians, bump outs crosswalks, raised bus stop boarding inlets and more.
The Bike-Bus-Walk Improvements was initially brought up by Trailnet years ago and now construction is underway for the multi-lane corridor to be reconfigured with cyclists and pedestrians in mind.
“Tucker Boulevard, as we all know, is a street that is entirely too wide,” said Cara Spencer, Mayor of St. Louis. “No streets running through our downtown or any neighborhood really should be eight lanes wide. That’s not a street, it’s a highway and it makes our city less pleasant, less healthy and less safe.”
In recent years, national headlines out of St. Louis involved visiting pedestrians dying by being struck by reckless drivers. Both from afar and domestic, this violent image of the streets weighs on people.
“I’m a pretty confident cyclist,” said Michael Heaney, St. Louis resident. “I’m really more excited for my kids who are teenagers, who often don’t want to bike downtown or some of the bigger streets because it’s intimidating. So I think it will be easier for them to join me.”
