Capitol Day - Jefferson City Information

Map
Here is an interactive map of parking, hotels, etc. and driving directions.

For the 2018 and 2019 legislative sessions, extensive construction is underway on the Capitol building. This affects building access, parking, and the Legislators Ride:

  • Many parking spots are unavailable. Best bet for parking is probably the Jefferson City Municipal Parking Garage at 200 Madison (expect a small parking fee). Capitol area parking map here.
  • Typically only one entrance to the Capitol is open--enter via a passage through the construction area near the west corner of the Capitol building. Expect delays as security workers search and scan each visitor as well as bags and parcels.
  • Legislators Ride will start at the Governor's Garden, one block SE of the Capitol building near the Governor's mansion.

Hotels
Hotels within walking distance include the Doubletree, De Ville, and Capitol Plaza, which all average $80-100 per night. Several budget motels are located along US Hwy 54, about two miles away.  Average prices are $50-70 and they are within easy bicycling distance of the Capitol.

Bicycle Parking

Bicycle racks are available next to the bus stop at High and Jefferson Streets. However, for Capitol Day we encourage you to bring your bike into the Capitol to join our display on the third floor.  Just carry up the main staircase or find elevators near the front entrance.

Automobile parking
There are several parking lots on the west side of the Capitol, around West High Street and Missouri Blvd.  Garages are located east of the Capitol, within 2-3 blocks.  Hourly on-street parking is also available near the Capitol. Plan to arrive early if you need curb-side parking to unload displays.

Amtrak
The Amtrak station is two blocks from the Capitol and within walking distance of the Downtown hotels. Bicycles can be rolled on board fully assembled, but only if you reserve a bike space when purchasing your ticket (www.amtrak.com). Morning trains arrive around 11:30 a.m.  Return trains depart between 6:00-7:00 p.m., leaving plenty of time to join us for dinner before your departure.  See also, MBF's guide to Amtrak in Missouri.

Restaurants
The Hawthorne Room cafeteria is located in the basement of the Capitol building--the best choice for grabbing a quick bite between meetings.  Several restaurants are located on East High Street, with Cafe Via Roma coffee house and Arri's Pizza across the street from the Capitol.
