From there, you went to work at Trailnet. How did the organization get its name?
Trailnet used to build trails. It was formed by then-Mayor Vince Schoemehl in 1986 to be a conduit for trails to the Mississippi River.
So Trailnet wasn't organized just to encourage more bike riding?
No, that's only a part of what we do. Our goal is to create more livable communities and to develop partnerships to implement plans and programs that further livability. We do this at the community level. We have helped communities develop 20 bikable, walkable master plans. We have a program called "Safe Routes to Schools," that is designed to help make it possible for kids to walk and bike safely to their schools.
How often do you ride your bike to work and how far of a ride is it?
It's 12 miles in each direction, and I ride about 80 percent of the time, except during the winter months.
