Obesity costs US $80 billion annually

According to a ReutersHealth article:
Fortune 500 companies from Ford Motor Co. to General Mills Inc. said on Tuesday they will work together to fight an epidemic of obesity in America that is hitting companies' bottom lines.

Obesity shaves $12 billion from companies' budgets each year because of health care costs . . .

A study released last month found that obesity and related illnesses accounted for as much as $78.5 billion of the nation's health care tab, which has been estimated at $1.5 trillion.

The U.S. spends much on obesity-related illnesses, yet has neglected efforts to stem the tide, the report said.
Perhaps businesses and/or government could spend 1% of all that wasted money helping make it easier to walk and bike to work? Seems worth a try . . .
