What do you do when the worst happens and you are in a collision or "accident" on your bicycle?

Michael Colbach, a bicycling attorney from Portland, Oregon, has an interesting FAQ about questions you might have if you are involved in a car-bike, bike-bike, or bike-pedestrian collision. His FAQ includes the answers to such questions as
  • Can I recover even if the motorist didn't hit me [yes]
  • Can I recover even if the motorist had no insurance [yes]
  • Does my automobile insurance cover me when I am bicycling [maybe]
  • Do I need a lawyer? How will I pay for my lawyer? How will I pay for legal fees? [Being a lawyer, of course he believes that you do need one.]
The page also has links and references to other attorneys in the U.S. who are experienced with bike accidents and bicycle injury lawsuits.

Michael Bluejay has put together an comprehensive list of what to do if you are hit on your bicycle or involved with a collision or accident--everything from educating yourself about the legal system, consulting an attorney, working with the police, getting a copy of the accident report, filing a civil suit, and filing for insurance.
