Columbia's nonmotorized pilot project moves forward

According to a Columbia Tribune article, Columbia's $22 million nonmotorized pilot project planners have settled on the city's first projects under the recently approved plan:
A 14-point list OK’d by the Columbia Area Transportation Study Organization on Thursday includes separate $200,000 appropriations for curb cuts, crosswalks, medians, pedestrian signals, countdown timers, bicycle lanes and signage. . . .

Columbia was chosen last year to receive $22 million in federal highway funds to build a comprehensive network of trails throughout the city to encourage drivers to give up their cars and travel on foot or by bicycle. Marin County, Calif., Minneapolis-St. Paul and Sheboygan County, Wis., also were selected to receive the money.

"I’m very excited," said Fred Schmidt of the city’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Commission [and MoBikeFed's Treasurer]. "We’re very excited they were kind of able to fast-track this."
