RAAM rider injured crossing Mississippi River bridge

A Race Across America participant was struck by an automobile while crossing the Mississippi River from Missouri to Illinois.

The collision happened Saturday about 10:30PM. The rider, Swiss cyclist Daniel Maegerle, is in the hospital and it appears he may recover without serious permanent injury. His team, DAMOVO, withdrew from the race in order to stay with Maegerle.

The rider was evidently crossing on the Clark Bridge, which opened in 1994 and has 10-foot shoulders marked for use by bicyclists and pedestrians.

More details are on the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and WLS-TV.
