St. Louis Post-Dispatch Columnist Mandy St. Amand bike commutes
St. Louis Post-Dispatch columnist Mandy St. Amand has joined the ranks of bicycle commuters:
The price of a gallon of gas went up at least a nickel last week in the Metro East area, to $2.98, at the gas stations I frequent. That was all it took to spur me to try something I'd never done before — ride my bike to work. For those interested in following Mandy's lead and giving bicycle commuting a try--even just a day or two a week--MoBikeFed has a list of helpful web sites.
All sorts of bicycle advocacy groups and promoters urge commuters to ride their bikes to work, or at least give it a try a few times. So even though I missed National Bike-to-Work Day by more than a month — it was May 18 — why not give it a try? So on Friday morning, the first full day of summer, I traded the key ring for clip shoes. . . .
Biking to work took more thought, more time and more effort than hopping behind the wheel. For me, that's a good thing.
