Pledge drive to "Put People on Paseo"

Let's Go KC in cooperation with the Missouri Bicycle Federation and many other bicycling, walking, and trails groups across the region and state has announced a new project to Put People on Paseo.

What we would like to see is hundreds and even thousands of people making a pledge. Even just a small amount helps--just $5 or $10.

Only 1% more* is needed to make the quarter billion dollar Paseo Bridge into the first really good, safe Missouri River crossing for pedestrians and bicyclists of all ages and levels of ability, between Boonville and the Nebraska border.

So how about making a symbolic pledge of 1% of your daily, weekly, or monthly income towards this effort?

Knowing that the average citizens are willing to put up a little bit of their own money to make the first safe bicycle/pedestrian connection across the river become reality, will really light a fire under the agencies that need to fund that last 1% that will turn the Paseo bike/ped crossing from potential vague future plan to present reality.

MoDOT has approved three of its largest projects statewide as experimental "Design-Build" projects.

One of them is the quarter-billion dollar Paseo Bridge project, which will cross the Missouri River near downtown Kansas City, Missouri.

Because literally thousands of members of the public wrote MoDOT and other agencies during Paseo Bridge planning, MoDOT has pledged to find 10 feet of deck space on the new bridge for a separated bicycle/pedestrian path.

But--they haven't found that last 1% in the bridge's quarter billion dollar budget to actually connect that 10 feet of deck space to the ground on each side of the bridge.

For that reason, a coalition of bicycling, walking, running, and trails groups have started a pledge drive--pledging just $5 or $10 towards completion of the bridge will help encourage the participating cities, agencies, and of course MoDOT itself, to find the rest of the funding needed to "Put People on Paseo".

* Note: The figure of 1% of the cost is (obviously!) an approximation. Final, precise cost estimates are not in yet. However the final cost for adding bike/ped facilities to Paseo will be very low in proportion to the total cost of the Paseo project, on the order of 1%, and will be a small fraction--perhaps 10-20%--of the cost of building an independent, standalone pedestrian bridge across the river near that point.
